As mentioned previously the Prague metro system is very cheap and easy to use. In the 1970’s the decision was made to build an underground for Prague so that the city would have efficient local transportation. Today, the metro spans an area of 50 kilometres with 50 stations along the 3 lines.
The metro is divided into 3 lines A, B & C, which are colour coded: green, yellow and red. The metro starts at 5 am and the last departure is around midnight.
Line A (Green) - runs east from Skalka to Dejvická in the West
Line B (Yellow) - runs East from Cerný to Zlicín in the West
Line C (Red) – runs north from Nádraží Holešovice to Háje in the South
There are three transfer stations in the city center where two lines intersect:
Mustek (lower end of Wenceslas Square) - lines A and B
Muzeum (upper end of Wenceslas Square) - lines A and C
Florenc (main bus station) - lines B and C
Each transfer route is clearly marked and takes approximately 3-5 minutes.
Prague’s integrated transport system consisting of the underground, trams and buses, is divided into seven fare zones. The area of the capital is divided into two fare zones, zone (P) and finishing zone (0). Suburban area is divided into five outside zones (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Fare is based on travel time and number of zones.
Transfer tickets for two fare zones can be used 60 minutes from the time the ticket has been validated and costs 12 CZK for adults. Non-transfer tickets apply to trams and buses 15 minutes allowing no change. On the Metro such tickets are valid for the distance of 4 stations from the station of validation (not including the station of validation) allowing to change between the lines A,B,C, but no longer than 30 minutes. These tickets are not valid on night routes and funicular railway.
We would recommend that visitors to Prague buy a season 3 day ticket which allows unlimited travel on Prague’s integrated transport system. These tickets can be purchased for 200 CZK and are sole at Metro stations, newsagents, Travel Information Centres, most Prague hotels and travel agencies. They are also available from a number of ticket vending machines installed next to surface transport stops, at Metro stations and funicular stations.
