Prague is not only a very scenic city to explore it’s also a lot of fun for children too. The various modes of transport in Prague are exciting for children too with its horse drawn carts, trams, rowing boats and river cruises. We have put together this short guide of things to do for kids in Prague that we hope will give you a few ideas on where to go with the family when visiting Prague.
Petrin Hill
Petrin Hill is a particularly fun area of Prague to bring the children. Located on the opposite side of the river to the Old and New Town areas, Petrin Hill overlooks the Lesser Quarter. You can reach Petrin Hill on foot by crossing over the Charles Bridge and strolling through the winding streets of the Lesser Quarter. A quicker and more fun alternative would be to take the funicular railway which departs from the lower station near Ujezd.
Petrin Hill is a large wooded area with the largest green space in the city of Prague. This makes it a popular destination for picnics and walks especially during the spring and summer months.
Of particular interest for visitors of all ages is the prominent 60 metre tall observation tower (Rozhledna). The observation tower is commonly known as Prague’s mini Eiffel Tower and provides spectacular views of the city. The tower is open from 10am to 7pm daily from April to October and from 10am to 5pm during the months of November to March. The charge for climbing the tower is 25 Kc for adults and 5Kc for children.
Another fun activity on Petrin Hill is the Mirror Maze. This crazy maze of distorting mirrors provides fun for all the family whilst also leading to a display depicting the defence of Prague from the Swedes that took place on Charles Bridge in 1648. Entrance to the maze costs 30 Kc and is open daily. Opening times during the months: April to October are 9.30am to 6.30pm and from November to March are 9am to 4pm.
Prague Zoo
Young children are always amazed by the variety of animals in zoos and are an educational experience as well as a lot of fun! Prague zoo is next to the western border of Troja Park in Prague. In addition to the usual animals found in zoos are the very small Przewalski horses that are part of Prague zoo’s successful breeding programme. Another interesting feature in this zoo is the chairlift which brings visitors to the highest parts of the zoological gardens. The zoo overlooks the Vltava River and the scenery of Prague from that height is just awesome. Entrance into the zoo costs 50 Kc and is open daily. To get there, take the 112 bus from the Nadrazi Holesovice metro station or else check out their website for more directions.
