Prague’s Jewish Museum has one of the largest collections of Judaic art and culture in the world. Containing over 40,000 exhibits and 100,000 books, the Jewish Museum is unique not only in terms of the number of its exhibits, but because they are all from the region of Bohemia and Moravia, presenting an integrated picture of Jewish life and history in the area

. The exhibitions of the museum are spread over six historic locations in the Jewish Quarter; the Maisel Synagogue, Spanish Synagogue, Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, Klausen Synagogue and the Ceremonial Hall. The exhibitions are open every day except Saturdays and Jewish Holidays. From April to October, opening times are 9am to 6pm; from November to March, opening times are 9am to 4.30pm.

National Museum
Václavské námestí 68
115 79 Prague 1

Prague’s National Museum stands at the top of Wenceslas Square and contains extensive collections of prehistoric artefacts, mineralogy and petrology, palaeontology, zoology and anthropology. The building housing the museum is a highlight in itself as it is testimony to the Czech Republic’s revival in the arts.

The National Museum is open daily except for the first Tuesday of the month. From May to September, opening times are 10am to 6pm; from October to April, opening times are 9am to 5pm

Dvorak Museum
Vila Amerika
Ke Karlovu 20 1

Prague’s Dvorak Museum is one of the more interesting tributes to this great composer. Housed in an elegant Baroque villa located southeast of Charles Square, visitors can listen to recordings of Dvorak’s music while wandering through displays of his scores and other exhibits. The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 5pm.

Prague Castle Gallery

The Prague Castle complex is home to two galleries. Gallery I in Prague Castle has a permanent collection of approximately 400 paintings and drawings dating from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Some of the more well known and valuable paintings in the collection are Titian's Toilet of a Young Lady, Tintoretto's Flagellation of Christ and Rubens's The Assembly of the Olympic Gods. There are other major works by artists including Hans von Aachen, Domenico Fetti, Bartolomeo Spranger, Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Bassano.

Gallery II holds temporary exhibitions, but also has a small permanent exhibition of pieces from the reign of Rudolph II. Both galleries are open Tuesdays to Sundays. Gallery I is open from 9am to 5pm and gallery II is open from 10am to 6pm.

National Gallery of Modern Art

Veletrzni Palace
Dukelskych hrdinu, 47
Prague 7
17000

Set in the imposing 1920s Trade Fairs building, Prague’s National gallery of modern art is the best place to see some Czech modern art. Czech art followed the same general lines of development as that of Western Europe, but with an underlying layer of Slavic spirituality - witness the moody landscapes of Jan Preisler, the mind-blowing abstracts of Frantisek Kupka and the meditative canvases of Vladimir Kokolia, to name but a few. There is also a small collection of Western European paintings by Picasso, Braque, Klimt and others. Two or three temporary exhibits of Czech or foreign work are usually always on show and these are often among the best in town. The Nation Gallery is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 6pm.
