Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is an architecturally beautiful city. Considered by many to be the heart of Europe, it covers an area of almost 500 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 1.3 million people. The centre of Prague however is a compact area and would be comparable with the likes of Rome (only smaller!) as a very walkable city. Thanks to Prague’s remarkably efficient and integrated public transport system, all areas of the city are accessible. This means, regardless of the location of your hotel, you are guaranteed to be well connected with all other areas.
Regardless of Prague’s relatively small size, it can still take time to find where you want to go and how you are going to get there if it is your first visit. Here’s where we can help. Prague has naturally divided into five main areas located on either side of the Vltava River which runs through the city. 16 bridges provide easy crossing from one side of the river to the other and all are overlooked by Prague’s famous 100 spires. The outskirts of the city provide a fabulous Bohemian landscape that is notably hilly with plenty of gorges.
Most Prague hotels are located in one of Prague five main areas. Click on the links below to find the most suitable hotel in Prague for your trip.
Stare Mesto – the historic Old Town
The Old Town lies at the heart of the city and also encompasses the Jewish quarter (Josefov) in its northern section.
Mala Strana – the Lesser Quarter
The Lesser Quarter is on the opposite side of the river to the Old Town and lies between two hills. On one hill is the famous and very beautiful Prague Castle and Cathedral complex and on the other hill, known as Petrin Hill, is lots of green space surrounding the tallest tower in Prague. This mini Eiffel Tower call Rozhledna offers those willing to climb the many steps, awesome views of Prague city. Mala Strana is a lovely area to stroll through with its winding streets lines with impressive house and magnificent palaces.
Hradcany – Prague Castle and Cathedral Complex
As mentioned previously, the area of Hradcany is a hilly area which overlooks the Lesser Quarter. It is on the opposite side of the river to the Old Town area of Prague but is still within walking distance. Both Hradcany and the Lesser Quarter are easily accessible to the other areas by crossing over the Charles Bridge.
Nove Mesto – the New Town
As the name suggests, the New Town area has more modernist architecture compared to other areas of Prague. Visitors will notice many examples of Art Nouveau in this region. The well known Wenceslas Square in located in the New Town also.
Vysehrad – Prague’s Fortress area
Vysehrad is claimed to be the area around which Prague was first established. Vysehrad is located south of the New Town and is said to have many myths associated with this fortress area.
